Traffic Kiosks at the Heart of Scotland
9th December 2005

The Opti-Line II being used at Harthill Services

Bespoke branded system
tailored for Traffic Scotland

Traffic Scotland launched on Tuesday 6th December with the unveiling of a new kiosk initiative at the Harthill "Heart of Scotland" Services on the M8, North Lanarkshire. This was followed by two more kiosks in Ballinluig (A9, Perth & Kinross) and Gretna (M74, Dumfries & Galloway).

The unit in recently refurbished Westbound Harthill Services was used by Minister for Transport & Telecommunications, Tavish Scott SMP, to launch the new web service for road users that replaces NADICS. The kiosk proved a hit with the minister and other road users.

This scheme uses the Opti-Line II kiosks from CyberD and Cyt-Lox 2005 to display upto the minute traffic alerts and information about future roadworks and maintenance to allow travellers to plan their journey whilst on the move. This kiosk deployment is an extension of the existing system installed earlier this year on the Stena Line Calendonian which provides this information to truck drivers.

The Traffic Scotland service (www.trafficscotland.org) is provided to the public by the Scottish Executive to help people plan and manage their journeys. Project Managers, Faber Maunsell, developed a strategy for rollout of the kiosks at strategic locations where acceess to traffic information is keenly sought. CyberD's technology was the ideal choice as we were able to create a bespoke version of Cyt-Lox 2005 with branding and a user feed back system. Cyt-Lox 2005 is easy to use and does not require any redesign of existing websites as well as being more easily accessible to wheelchair users by virtue of having all navigation buttons at the bottom of the screen and automatic scroll buttons. The Opti-Line II kiosk includes a touch screen and adequate housing for both the computer hardware and telecommunications hardware, making this a compact and easily serviced unit.

John Wills, IT Director of CyberD(UK).com Ltd said "We are proud to have been involved with this exciting project, especially the kiosk at Ballinluig as this truely is an ideal use of our technolgy taking important web based information directly to the people who need it most in areas where it is hardest to access it."
