Healthy Living With Simple Surf 2
25th April 2007

CyberD have supplied and fitted nine information systems to Medway Primary Care Trust giving their service users access to the NHS and Local Authorty web based services. This complete end to end installation includes hardware, software, hardware installation, hosting of a dedicated kiosk portal, portal design and development, remote monitoring, remote and on-site servicing and a telephone helpdesk support line.

These systems have been placed in Medway's new Healthy Living Centres where they will play a vital role in information provision and queue reduction. By using internet kiosk based technology Medway PCT are able to deliver to their users upto date information and interactive services such as the NHS "Choose & Book" system. The kiosks also provide access to the Meday Council web services making the kiosks a complete one-stop-shop for local and medical needs.

The hardware consists of a touch screen panel PC supported on an adjustable arm with a standard keyboard and optical mouse. The PCs use mobile based technology to reduce heat and do not include optical or floppy drives to reduce the risk of malicous tampering.

Secure and Fast with Simple Surf 2

Each unit has been installed with CyberD's Simple Surf 2 Basic Edition which provides complete interface security, website filtering, file type filtering and a recognisable user interface. The kiosk environment is continually monitored by CyberD's Watch Dog 2 application monitor which launches the user interface and maintains uptime by detecting "hung" processes and restarting them.

Simple Surf's keyboard and web security systems has allowed the use of standard keyboards and mice; these features also prevent users from accessing unwanted web based material and services without detriment to the user experience.

Easy Disabled Access

The combination of desk mounting, the four axis movement of the supporting arms and touch screen feature of the PCs offers enhanced access to users in wheelchairs or with restricted movement. As the keyboards and mice are not fixed to the desk these can be moved to suit the user's needs. These features are of utmost importance to local authority and medical installations, CyberD are keen to always fulfil these requirements when placing systems in public places.

Thinking Green with CyberD Power Management

Watch Dog 2 makes kiosk power management easy, each kiosk is configured to only run on allowed days and between assigned times. The Medway kiosks automatically switch on shortly before the centres open allowing the systems to carry house keeping and updates; they then automatically shut down shortly after the centres close, this means that there is no physical intervention with the kiosks by staff. This completely unattended and automated power management reduces operating costs, the units' carbon foot prints and reduces the risk of hardware failure and downtime.
